Hugo Ekitike Inspires Liverpool Comeback as Reds Crush Eintracht Frankfurt in Champions League Thriller
Hugo Ekitike scored against his former club as Liverpool roared back from a goal down to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in the Champions League. Van Dijk, Konate, Gakpo, and Szoboszlai also found the net in a dominant Reds performance.
After a shaky run of four straight defeats, including a disappointing loss to Manchester United, Arne Slot’s side looked under pressure early on. The hosts took the lead when former Leeds defender Rasmus Kristensen finished neatly after a sharp counter-attack exposed Liverpool’s backline.
But the Reds soon found their rhythm. Ekitike, playing alongside Alexander Isak for the first time, levelled the score 10 minutes before halftime after latching onto Andy Robertson’s superb long pass. His calm finish reignited Liverpool’s energy and belief.
Just minutes later, Virgil van Dijk powered home a header from a corner to give Liverpool the lead, and Ibrahima Konate added another before halftime, also from a set piece. The visitors went into the break 3-1 up, silencing a previously electric home crowd.
Isak was replaced at halftime due to a groin issue, but Liverpool’s dominance only grew stronger. In the second half, Cody Gakpo slotted in his fourth goal of the season from Florian Wirtz’s assist, before Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the victory with a stunning long-range strike — once again assisted by Wirtz.
Ekitike, who refused to celebrate against his former club, was voted Player of the Match for his goal and overall performance.
This result marks a major turnaround for Liverpool, who had conceded 18 goals in their last 13 matches — a stark contrast from their solid defensive record last season. Arne Slot’s decision to rest Mohamed Salah, despite his 52 Champions League goals, proved successful as Liverpool rediscovered their attacking rhythm.
Frankfurt’s Perspective:
Eintracht Frankfurt started brightly but couldn’t sustain their early intensity. Their opener showcased their counter-attacking threat, but their defensive issues resurfaced once Liverpool took control. The German side, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season, have now suffered three consecutive home defeats, conceding 12 goals in that stretch.
What’s Next:
Liverpool will look to carry this momentum into the Premier League when they face Brentford on Saturday, October 25 (20:00 BST).
Eintracht Frankfurt will aim to bounce back in the Bundesliga against St Pauli on the same day at 14:30 BST.
